Paper 1 A and B April 24 (Friday)

You will write an entire paper 1 over two lessons (Friday and Monday). Read about paper 1 in Psychology here: External exams

Revising for the mini-mocks

Since you have limited time due to other exams and regular lessons happening in this period, I suggest this approach:

1) Ignore biological content completely (if you are asked a biological question you can probably remember something because this is the first thing we did and it overlaps with your other study areas, just keep calm and write what you can remember to get some points)

  1. Revise the content for cognitive psychology (see Notion-link below): a) make sure you can explain the content (e.g. what is a schema and what is their purpose, what is one model of memory, what is system 1 and 2 (the dual process theory) etc).b) make sure you can give an example of the content-this can be a study or your own example-When I see a bird the information  goes into my sensory memory and if I pay attention the bird enters my short term memory...)

  2. Revise the content for group behaviour (under sociocultural content):  a) make sure you can explain the content (e.g. what is comformity and how does it happen, what social identity theory, what is social learning theory?etc).b) make sure you can give an example of the content-this can be a study or your own example- Conformity can be seen in how people dress, people who are friends often dress in a similar way..)

For Paper 1C you need to revise only 4 concepts (bias, measurement, causality and responsibility).

You cannot revise every possible question that may come in section C so focus instead on knowing the content (see above) and keep up with the critical thinking activities that we do in class every week.

Make sure you are familiar with the key terms for each concept:

Bias: internal validity, researcher bias, participant bias, demand characteristics, external variables, confounding variables, skew, gender/age/cultural bias etc

Measurement: qualitative or quantitative data, self-report data, reliability, control, threats to internal validity, bias, research method (how is data collected?)

Causality: cause and effect relationships, experiment, control, internal validity, bias, variables, what is being measured? How? Can cause and effect be established? Are there confounding variables?

Responsibility: What is being studied and how? What will it mean that we find something out and the greater community finds something out? Ethical considersations like consent, protection from harm, confidentiality-OFTEN MORE OF AN ISSUE IN THE SOCIOCULTURAL AND BIOLOGICAL APPROACH! But measuring memory might be sensitive if we connect intelligence with memory e.g. working memory.

In the essay it is crucial that you focus on the words in the questions and respond to them. Aim to have 3-5 main points in the response and frame them with and introduction where you say what you will say and a conclusion where you say what you said in other words.

Remember to talk about the concept (e.g. bias) and relate to the content and real life context.

The mini-mocks will be on everything we have done in the context of Human Relationships and Learning and cognition. Below you can see the content , context and concepts you should be able to write about.

Content (core of psychology: bio, cognitive and sociocultural psych) to prepare:

Biological content Sociocultural content Cognitive content
Localisation of function Social identity theory (Tajfel) Schema theory
Chemical messengers Conformity (Asch) Model of one cognitive process (Multistore Model of Memory)
Neuroplasticity Compliance (Cialdini) Strategies to improve one cognitive process (memory)
Neurotransmission Social learning theory Cognitive load theory
Brain imaging (fMRI or MRI) Dual process theory (system 1 and 2)
Cultural dimensions (Hofstede)
Enculturation
Acculturation
Emic and etic approaches
Cognitive dissonance theory

Context (areas of study in real life) to prepare:
